Report: USB Storage Coming to Xbox 360 By Mike Sharkey | Mar 18, 2010 Microsoft to finally offer an alternative to its HDDs, memory cards, but storage cap dampens impact. A document written by a senior software development engineer at Microsoft indicates an upcoming Xbox 360 system update will allow gamers to put the console's USB ports to good use. USB storage is finally coming to the 360. The folks at Joystiq obtained the aforementioned document which states the system update, coming this spring, will make it possible for up to two USB storage devices of up to 16 GB each to be used to store saves, digital media, and even full disc-based games. From Joystiq: With an artificial cap of 16 GB – still shy of the 20 GB hard drive that shipped with the original 2005 Xbox Pro and a fraction of the size of the currently shipping 120 GB hard drive – USB storage support simply removes the onerous requirement for a Memory Unit on Xbox 360 Arcade units, and brings the Xbox 360 platform a feature that's been present on the PlayStation 3 since that console's 2006 launch. ------------------------------------------------------ I'm digging this in a big way. I've always thought this would be a nice feature, but never thought they would do it......till I read this. Only thing i'm wondering about is, is microsoft going to force you to buy one of their branded usb sticks or can you by an off the shelf brand?

Wow. I'm surprised they are doing this. It's great though. I've only got 2.2 GB left on my hard drive. Lol.

I'm surprised it didn't already have this. Seems like kind of a simple feature to be missing. I don't really use USB storage on my PS3...more for transferring file between PS3s/PCs.
Why the 16GB cap though?

Not sure why on the cap. Maybe that's all it will recognize? But this feature will be used a lot on the 360 I'm sure. Most of us only have the 20 GB hard drive, which fills up fast, especially if you install a game to it.

they most likely put a cap because a 32g is around $75 & a 64g is around $144 (prices from newegg.com). with a price around $144 for a 64g, they figure you can buy the 120g hdd for around $120 & the 60g starter pack for $90.

Flash drives, sure. But will portable HDDs not work with this? Those are much more wallet friendly.

Here is a update on this. -----------------------------------------------------
USB Storage Coming to Xbox 360 April 6 7:20 AM - March 29, 2010 by Jane McEntegart - source: Tom's Hardware US
Microsoft's Major Nelson has confirmed reports that USB storage is coming to the Xbox 360.
Zoom
We've been hearing rumors about the possibility of USB storage for the Xbox 360 for a while now. On Friday, Microsoft's Major Nelson confirmed the reports and said a system update to allow USB storage would land April 6.
"On April 6th, we will be releasing a system update over Xbox LIVE for your Xbox 360 that will allow USB flash drives to be used for storing profiles, game saves, demos and more. I’ve been testing this feature out for a few weeks, and I have to say it’s really great. Once you take the system update on April 6th, you’ll be able to connect your USB flash drives to your console and head over to the memory section to configure your new storage device."
Nelson writes that when you connect your drive to your Xbox, the will conduct a one time performance and integrity check to confirm the drive is working properly. With that out of the way, you're free to configure how much storage to use on the device, with the option to go up to 16GB. Though USB hard drives "might work," you'll still get the same 16GB limit that's present with the flash drives. Users can connect two devices at once for a limit of 32GB.
You can use any 1GB+ flash drive you like but Microsoft is partnering with SanDisk to bring out pre-configured Xbox-branded flash drive. Expect to see these in May.
In related news, a hacker claims to have gained access to Major Nelson's online account, and Microsoft is now investigating. ---------------------------------------------- depending on price, I might pick up the xbox branded one. I have a couple of sticks, but I use those for work and wouldn't want to put my gaming stuff on them.

I knew MS would gouge people on this!! This is retarded! *********************************************************** Official Xbox 360 USB drives priced by GameStop
by Mike Schramm { Mar 31st 2010 at 6:20PM } Xbox GameStop has leaked information about those official Xbox 360 USB hard drives we've heard about (first rumored and then officially), and they ain't cheap. According to the confusingly similar GameSpot (who saw the prices temporarily listed on GameStop's website), there will be both 8GB and 16GB drives available, the smaller for $39.99 and the larger for $69.99. According to Major Nelson, we'll see them in stores in May.
Of course, the system update will also allow you to use any USB drive (not just the official Xbox-branded ones), but before you get visions of 1TB of storage plugged into your Xbox, remember that there's a 16GB limit on each of two possible devices, so you can have only 32GB total. Fortunately, an unofficial 16GB flash drive is about half of Microsoft's price over on Newegg. You may have to tweak things a little bit, as the official drives are meant to be "plug and play," but it can't be that complicated. The GameStop listing is down for now, but we'll see these drives officially in just over a month or so anyway. *********************************************** SOOOOO, looks like i will be buying a non-branded stick.
