Who on here has this type of service and how is it as far as picture quality goes?
Reason I'm asking is because the HD channels on time warner are crappy!!!! Most of them are pixelated (spelling) when they switch scenes and ESPN is horrible. Have been thinking about switching but really don't want to unless it's better than I have now.

The 1080P is kinda funky though. You first have to order "that" box which is almost $200. Then, they are not all broadcasted in 1080P, there are certain channels. Movies channels and so on. Check the fine print. We just got it here at the house and if it rains, the tv is out until it stops raining as well. They both have there +'s, -'s.
We had cable HD as well. They were fine, have you ever considered maybe its your TV ? I know my dad bought a Dell LCD TV, yes a Dell TV. It's HD quality doesn't look as good as my Sharp Aquos LCD, so might want to look into that as well.

It's not the TV. EVERYONE in this area who has Time Warner has shitty HD quality. I'm under the assumption that they compress the signal so much it's pixelated.

if you sign up to directv the hd box is free, they only charge you if you upgrade to the HD DVR. i leave in MA where the weather is crazy & can honestly count on both hands the times its gone out over a 6+ year period due to weather.

I guess it differs on your location then. Cause I have had it about 2 weeks and it has went out about 4 or 5 times already. It rains here just about everyday too though. Joker you are correct, the HD box is free. But that HD box is not for 1080 P. Its only 780I,780P, and 1080I. Next time you get a chance go check it out. You have to buy the 1080P box and 1080P channels extra. Well, down here you do anyways. It may differ up there where you guys are.
My best friend bought a a big ass LCD that has 1080P. I was checking it out and it wasn't broadcasting the channels in 1080P but only the 1080I. His TV was 1080P capable though. So he called to have the sattelite company to see what the deal was and they told him for the 1080P they would have to bring out a different box and it was going to run him $200. He has the regular HD channels however.

LinkThat one time fee is $200 **EDIT** I did a little research and they only offer 1080P movies. None of the tv shows are broadcasted in 1080P. They only have 54 movies in 1080P and you have to pay $5.99 per movie for just about all of them. No need to get that upgrade unless your a movie freak. If that is the case just get a Blu-Ray player. Direct TV 1080P Show ListUse the filter and change the "All Formats" to 1080P

thanks for the info Bama. fuck that $200 box. my 720p 1080i box is just fine. plus i will watch my movies thru the ps3 for 1080p.
Bama you might want them to go out and check your shit. when they first hooked mine up anther tech had to come out and fix my shit, cuz the first tech didnt tighten down all the bolts on the dish.

That may be the case. It is fine however as long as it isn't raining. As soon as it starts to rain a little it cuts off.
Yea that box isn't worth it. It would be if tv stations would broadcast in 1080P but they wont no time soon. Not until more people get HDTV's and start purchasing the HD services.

Bama....you must not have a clear view of the southern sky. I have trees facing south and sometimes I will get a little interuption in service in the summer when the leaves are on the trees. But overall DTV is way better picture quality than TWC. I had TWC when I moved down to NC and it sucked...pixelated big time. Now I have DTV and it works great. I love my NFL Sunday Ticket....Fantasty Footballers love the redzone channel and the player tracker!!!

There is nothing wrong with the quality of it. It just goes off when it rains. The guy that hooked it up is an idiot and put the damn thing right beside the house facing west. But hell, I am as far south as you can get so don't eally know if that makes any difference. But when it is on, quality is fine

When it comes to satellite dish placement, location location location is key. I have some trees where i am at and i rarely have issues, and we can get some serious snow storms and rain. I not saying it wont go out at times, but we are happy with it as we get better service from it as opposed to ny where we had clear sky and it would take very little to fuck our shit up.
You should check your signal strenght, do you lose all channels or only the hd ones.. from what i remember the hd's are the first to go then the standard def..
My neighbor had a dish on his roof and he wasnt getting local channels because of trees.. but the placement of the dish was wrong.. He finally got his dish moved to a better location and he is now happy as hell..

I forgot to mention, the signal strenght on a clear day should be at 90% or higher, when there is something overhead (storms and such the signal will got down to like 70+ which is still good..
If your signal is lower on a clear day, when there is something overhead then the signal gets alot lower. anything in the 65% or lower range will kill your signal and youll get serious choppyness and "searchig for satellite signal".
I used to install dishes and i learned a lot about the placement of the dish. Most techs come and just place it where they get a signal even if it'snot the best they can do.. a good tech will get your shit right the first time and take his time getting you the best possible signal by testing the dish in diffferent areas.
most got to drop install and get tot he next customer.
I remember that everytime i upgraded my dish they would palce it then leave. I would then go out and tweak the dish to get the best signal. When I last moved the techs that came to install the dish did an awesome job, even on the windiest day i get a good signal. I have yet to go to the roof and re-adjust and it's been up there for almost 2 years and has been thru many snow and rain storms (mind you I live up in a mountain region).
