Next-generation "cloud" technology could change videogames forever. by Chris Roper March 23, 2009 - Before I dive into what OnLive is and how it works, let me start by saying that you should read every word of this article as this service has the potential to completely change the way games are played. If it works and gets proper support from both publishers and gamers, you may never need a high-end PC to play the latest games, or perhaps even ever buy a console again. That is not an exaggeration. Just announced at this year's GDC, OnLive is an on-demand gaming service. It's essentially the gaming version of cloud computing - everything is computed, rendered and housed online. In its simplest description, your controller inputs are uploaded, a high-end server takes your inputs and plays the game, and then a video stream of the output is sent back to your computer. Think of it as something like Youtube or Hulu for games. Keep Reading Here

Video for the lazy ones Part1Part 2Update** www.onlive.com/It says on the website "Stay Tuned 03-24-2009 7:15PM PDT " and has a countdown. I assume that the site will be going live then. I must say that this has a chance to make consoles a thing of the past. Can you imagine the endless graphic capabilities, no more cross platform shit. If it kills out the consoles then there wont be no more "Exclusives" out there. We can all play together on the same shit. Awesome idea and I will be sure to purchase my subsciption when it comes out this winter. What do you guys think about this service ?

I'll remain skeptical until this actually happens. That's a whole lot of data to transfer to a whole lot of people (potentially) over an Internet connection. They must have some amazing servers.
If this is like digital movie downloads where they dumb down the quality to make it work, no thanks, I'll take my console.

They said 720P60.(720 progressive at 60 frames per second) Dont think that is scaled down. I play my xbox on the same thing right now. Im with you though, it is a great "idea" but how will it work when thousands of people are banging them servers. Hmm I really think that it could be legit though, having all the big names publishers behind them.

Yeah, but I'm not sure how much I am for having to pay monthly just to get my game on. Even if it's only $10 a month, that's $120/year, $600/5 years. Now, if you say that the average console has a life of 5 years, then there is no way I would pay $600 for a console. That's why I went with the 360 and not the PS3. So from that aspect, not sure how much I am for it.
Another thing is what's encouraging these guys to push the graphics and controls up every year? Do you think we would have seen anything like the Wii if it never launched?? There are definitely some pros to it, but I feel like there may be more cons as of right now.
Oh yeah, if you want to play on your TV, you still have to buy a little box to be able to do that. I'll keep my console.

They said they can basically give you the micro console because it is so cheap to make. I wouldnt expect the price to be more then the Xbox Live service. If anything it should match it at the highest.
You have to think, they are going to have to have something really special in order to get people like me and you to sign up. With that said, I think they can sale the games cheaper on their because there aren't production costs to the game developers. No disk to make, no manual, and no store to send it to. They have to give us, the console owners, a reason to jump ship. Otherwise it will fail.

Nifty idea. Even though I am sick of the console wars, I am afraid if this idea takes off, it could be like Zipper, where they address bugs and glitches at their own leisurely time.

The thing is they can fix them faster. They dont have to send them patches through Microsoft or Sony for testing. They said they can just write whatever new code and put it in the server. The next time you load up the game its good to go. No wait time.

A better idea would be a joint venture between Sony and Microsoft. One console to rule them all. Can you imagine? I don't know what all the fanboys would do with themselves...

my thing is how do developers really make their money. say if the service only $10 a month to access on live. what is in it for the game makers to make new content for it. they would make more money selling a game at $60 a pop.

the only real downside is the resolution on dsl connections. when i playt a game i like it to look fucking awesome on my tv, if it's of a lower resolution, like sdtv it's gonna look shitty as all fuck.. sdtv on a 60inch isnt a attractive picture..
