We knew it was coming, but on Tuesday Sony introduced the first PS3 SOCOM game and continuation of the SOCOM U.S. Navy SEALs series. Called Contfrontation, we got an early look at what this online-only game is going to be all about when it ships later in the year.
The showing of the game was prefaced with some numbers to prove to us apparent disbelievers just how popular the SOCOM series is. On the PS2, it was the number one online title, topping off 2 million users worldwide, and on the PSP it was the biggest online game. Each user averages 4.5 hours per play session, so the "duh" factor is pretty high for SOCOM being the first leading online game for the PS3.
Here's what was shown and/or talked about :
The gameplay in the demo video takes place in a Central/South American-style city square.
There are weapons that range from pistols to machine guns to full-on RPGs
Gunfire is intense and present throughout the entire demo. The good ol' explosive barrel makes a notable appearance, taking out numerous enemies
SOCOM: Confrontation is described as the "ultimate SOCOM online experience"
It's an online-only, multiplayer game
It's available for purchase as a download on the PlayStation Network (PSN) or on Blu-ray disc at retail
The game has lots of interactive elements in the environment
The engine was built from the ground up for the PS3
It was make full use of the Sixaxis and PS3 hard disk drive
Characters will have a full range of customization
Clans can be customized with uniforms and logos
Clan tournaments and challenges will be held
I do expect SOCOM to be a pretty big success for the PS3, and it's another title like Warhawk and LittleBigPlanet that is going for a multiplayer, online-only experience. Sony seems to be making a push to get good exclusive experiences on PSN to complete with Xbox Live, and it's probably a good idea.
