UK, February 25, 2008 - Phil Harrison, the President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, has announced that he is to be parting ways with the electronics giant after 15 years. In a statement released today, Harrison revealed that his resignation will be effective as of February 29 2008.
During his tenure at the company, Harrison quickly emerged as a figurehead for the PlayStation brand, being active in the launch of every iteration to date of Sony's gaming hardware. PlayStation 3's somewhat tempestuous launch and first year may have taken their toll on Harrison, and in what may be his last official public engagement for Sony at this year's GDC, Harrison spoke out about how the firm's reluctance to fully embrace social gaming handed Nintendo a significant advantage. Regardless, Harrison has been a vocal and lively figurehead for the PlayStation brand and was responsible for establishing Sony as videogame heavyweights.
Of his time at the company, Harrison said, "The past 15 years at Sony Computer Entertainment has been the defining journey of my life so far. I am grateful to all the PlayStation family for their incredible support, guidance and friendship. It has been a privilege to serve as part of the team and be inspired by them on a daily basis. I am so proud of everything PlayStation has achieved and will continue to support its future in every way I can."
Kaz Hirai, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, added that, "As one of the founding members of SCE, Phil played a key role in the development and growth of the PlayStation business and our industry. It is sad to see him departing from SCE, but I wish to express my gratitude for his many invaluable contributions and also wish Phil the very best of luck in his future endeavors."
Sony is yet to release a statement on how Harrison's resignation will affect the internal structure of SCEE, though for the time being Hirai will assume responsibilities.
With the PS3 supposedly gaining ship, This seems kinda off to me.
