dont know how true this is:
Forty per cent failure rate for 40GB PS3 Story By Mark Podd Shocking-if-true failure rate reported by Belgians Sony appears to be having problems with failure rates on the new 40GB PlayStation 3 model, according to retail sources.
Speaking to Dutch site Gamed.nl, Belgian games retailer Games Mania has said that while the new 40GB model is selling well, some 40 per cent of the new consoles sold so far have been returned due to hardware defects that result in the console being unable to read Blu-Ray and other discs.
No actual numbers have been made available so far, so it’s unclear whether this is simply a case of a single retailer receiving a batch of dud consoles or whether this is a more sizeable problem along the lines of the infamous 360 three red lights issue.
Given the lack of similar reports from around the globe, we’d certainly hold off from declaring the 40GB as unreliable just yet. However, it is worth pointing out that the 40GB model has been made using revised manufacturing techniques designed to lower costs, and features fewer cooling vents than previous models.

Sony Denies PS3 Failure Reports Forty percent of all 40Gb PlayStation 3's not blowing up at all, says David Reeves. by Matt Wales, IGN UK
UK, November 8, 2007 - Sony has responded to internet reports claiming its newly-released 40GB PlayStation 3 is suffering from a 40 percent failure rate, the company categorically denying the claims.
In an official statement, David Reeves, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe noted, "We are very proud of the quality and reliability of PlayStation 3 and are disappointed that such extremely sloppy journalism has resulted in this totally inaccurate story". He continued, highlighting the console's "fantastic jump" in sales since the release of Sony's 40GB PS3, alongside the machine's "very low" failure rates.
News of PlayStation 3's blowing up like they'd all got together to have some kind of blowing up competition hit internets following a story on Dutch website Gamed.nl. The site claimed Belgian games retailer Games Mania had revealed that, despite selling well, Sony's 40GB PS3 was suffering a return rate of 40 percent, with customers experiencing disc-read issues.
Still, not true says Sony. So nevermind, eh?
