the rumor is the hd-dvd for the 360 will be $100 for this add on. so this put's it still $100 cheaper then ps3. but like i said this is a price rumor!
but it isnt just the $600 price tag! youll be spending close to 800-900 for the system on launch week.
PS3= $600 (for the unit that has everything) 2nd controller= $40-50 (going buy prices of 360 controller range, corded $40-wireless $50) games= $60 each on nex-gen titles (gonna want 2-3 games)
total= $770 with 2 games & controller....$830 with 3 games and controller.
that is fucking crazy for a videogame system in my eyes.
i bought my 360 premium with 2 games and xtra controller for around $570 still $200 cheaper then the ps3 (with 2 games & contoller). this is way too much for a system, ill most likely play the 360 till the ps3 drops price. i can think of a lot more shit i can buy around my house for $800.
oh i forgot to add in the xtra warranty you wanna buy for these systems, around $30-40 (depends where u buy it).

It will be a miracle if the HD DVD player costs $100 for the 360. An HD DVD player is going for $500+ at Best Buy. I am guessing it should cost in the $300 range. Which levels the price for the 360 to the PS3. As for spending all that money for a gaming consol, I know cats that spend upwards of $3k just for a gaming pc. So again, if you do the math, its cheaper to buy a gaming consol. Lets face it, we all went better graphics, technology and of course power. We gotta pay for it. If price was the case, I would have stuck with my NES system for the fun factor. I am not trying to justify spending almost a $1G for a gaming system, because even I feel thats absurd. But, if you gotta have the newest toy on the block, pay up, otherwise wait till x-mas of 08 for the price to drop.

i agree with you ko about if u want the best toy you need to pay up. paying $3k for a gaming pc is a little different, cuz you can alot more then just game on them (vid edit, burn dvd, etc.) but i was saying this is the price that people are hearing for the hd-dvd add on. also heard they are getting ready to make a 360 with hd-dvd standard in it. on g4 lastnight they talked to the 360 excutive and he said they are offering it seperate, so if you want to make the jump to watch hd-dvd movies u have that option. but anyway here is something i found on the price for the hd-dvd...this aint etched in stone so we'll have to wait and see. it might come in at $100, cuz microsoft may think this is our chance to come in under sony and try and get more sales cuz they are alittle lower in price.
via internet: "Xbox 360 HD-DVD Player: $100 and HDMI READ MORE: HD-DVD, Home Entertainment, TOP, xbox 360 While it could be hubris, it seems Microsoft is ready to start crowing about the death of Blu Ray. Their add-on HD-DVD player should cost about $100 and will play HD-DVDs, therefore causing us to believe that it should have HDMI out. In an interview, Chris Lewis, MS exec in charge of Xbox Europe, basically says that HD-DVD is the way to go and that Blu Ray can sit and spin.
Blu-ray right now reminds us of another technology from Sony: Betamax. A bit like VHS — we think that HD DVD is the format that consumers, film studios and publishers will embrace. As you’re mentioning the cost of Blu-ray — we think it’s about giving consumers choice, we think it’s about not necessarily asking them to pay over the odds for a technology that, at the moment, is unproven. It’s an interesting bet to play — we’re watching what goes on, but I think we’re offering a broader, more flexible choice that doesn’t burden the consumer with a cost element that may be wasted."

I'm telling you right now, the shit is getting grimey.....
Last night in the sony forums, instead of good posts, they were mostly flaming all over the place and everyone. Xbox vs sony vs Nintendo.. Lotta harsh words exchanged.. I laugh at them. Just get both...

To be honest, I think Blue Ray will catch on with PC's rather than the the DVD marketplace because of its vast stoarge capacity. If the PS3 sells the magnitude 10 million+ systems that the PS2 sold, then Blue Ray will catch on more than the HD DVD, even though the HD DVD is cheaper. It will be an interesting year watching this all develop. I also predict the UMD's to disappear real soon. I thought that was a waste of technology and money.

this is gonna be an interesting battle. sony has released 3 products that come to mind, that they said would change the electronic market. 1:betamax, 2:minidisc's, 3:umd movies. the funny thing is i own all 3 of these product's and they have failed in being accepted in the consumer market. i would like to see how this one pans out after the smoke clears. because they are saying (70-75% i believe) are backing the hd-dvd's. universal studios, fox, disney to name a few. i found this on the net about this topic.
from internet: "Hollywood movie studios--not consumers--will likely decide the fate of the two formats, he says. The HD-DVD format could have the edge with the studios, he says.
The reason: HD-DVD discs are similar to current DVDs in that the recording layer is sandwiched between two 0.6 millimeter layers of plastic in the middle of the disc. This means existing production lines can be easily converted to manufacture HD-DVD discs--a possibility that was confirmed in conversations with Taiwanese disc makers at the Computex trade show in Taipei last week.
Because the recording layer in a Blu-ray disc is 0.1 millimeters below the surface on the top of a 1.1 millimeter substrate, this disc will require a new production line.
Hollywood studios, which produce billions of DVD discs a year, are very sensitive to even a slight rise in the price of production."

Joker you know what? You have a strong valid point and I agree with you 500%. But, with Blue Ray, I predict it will be a hot commodity in the video gaming/PC/Mac industry because of its massive storage space and it will catch on there, and thats about it. Now I just hope that Sony clones XBox live otherwise i will be wasting $600+ in November.
As for the Beta-Max, I felt that format was way superior to VHS, and yes, my parents do one. Matter of fact, it still works to this very day.

i hope it does catch on in a way. otherwise i am gonna be pissed. i think blu-ray will come in strong on the gaming market (i think), like you said.
funny thing my dad still has his beta hooked up with all his new home theater stuff. he got some good ass old movies on dat shit. i remember the day he bought it. everyone else was getting vhs and he was like sony has a new technology called betamax. went and dropped a $1000 on that the spent another $400 for the componaint to make it "beta hi-fi". dem was the days...also had one of those big ass satellites in the backyard with the discrambler....LMAO...memories!!!

found this on the xbox forums. this wasnt posted by me, but this person who posted makes some good points. i know its alittle long, sorry. one thing i dont agree with is him saying it wont sell really that well. but anyways here it is.
posted by me1unone:
Quit arguing over the PS3 already, it wont sell at $600.00 move on with your lives. I havent even been coming here for like days, because of all these PS3 post's.
Just use common sense people, a console as expensive as a more versitile PC, or just as expensive as a mortgage payment, or even my car payment will never sell the neccesary amount to be the dominant console.
It really does boggle my mind, people need to be reminded this thing cost more then most peoples weekly checks (after taxes). I make a decent living, and honestly was going to purchase one, until the bombshell about its price was dropped on May, 9th.
When i think of the terrible track record sony has with consoles at this point, how could i even remotely justify the purchase? PS1's having to be flipped upside down to play games, PS2 disc read errors, and PSP obvious dead pixel flaws, combined make the Xbox360's 6% (estimated) defect rate, look like sugar covered lollipops.
Even sony themselves are not taking a massive chance on PS3, only promising 2,000,000 consoles at launch, (way down from the hyped 6-10 million they lied about weeks before the press conference).
The writing is so clearly on the wall, yet people keep arguing? Why? its like arguing if you drop a rock into a deep lake or off of a high buidling it will Swim/fly. Its just not possible. Xbox Fanboys need to be far more concerned with the Nintendo Wii, its cheap and will have a massive install base Japan, making it far and away the true competition this round.
Im no nintendo fan-boy, actually i would ultimately consider myself a Xbox Fanboy, but that aside i have a lick of common sense in my head, and No the most powerful (if even marginal) Videogame machine has never won a console war, not even putting into consideration 3DO and Neo-Geo both taught us how well $499.99 - $599.99 Video game consoles fair in the world market, the fare about as well as the swimming rock i just discussed above.
If anything we should be taking pity on Sony at this point, for truely thinking that with an estimated 23,000,000 HDTV's in use (Found that info on a HDTV forum some time back) that blu-ray will be a selling point, the average joe ignorant consumer will not even know the PS3 has one built in and will probally take the lunge on a stand alone unit, if at all. IMHO HD-DVD will be the last victor of format wars before digital distribution, but thats anouther story in itself.
Sony has completely alienated there number one consumer, the casual gamer. Sure 100,000,000 PS2's have been SHIPPED (yes keep that in mind) but how many of those people took the lunge AFTER price dropps to the $199.99 realm? Probally a decent 30%. The PS3 will never hit that mark in a 7 year market, thus alienating there number one consumer, joe everybody, because he as a everyday man cannot even consider a $600.00 plunge, especially when Joe everybody is usually rocking a 35 inch 4:3 sdtv, and wouldnt be ignorant enough to waste $1000.00 - $5500.00 to optimize his gaming device, because its ignorant..
with that being said, worry about the only true competition left people, thats Nintendo and there innovative Wii which will be the only true competitior in site this round, and even then i feel it will only be a Japan dominant console, with North america and Europe truely making up the dominant market share for consoles these days, even nintendo could be face down after this round of video game wars.

The previous author made good, strong valid points. The average joe gamer is in his teens, and very cash strapped. But in their defense, I just read this in the NY Times earlier this week. There was an article on the video game industry saying how everybody (game manufactures) postings for the 2nd quarter is at an all time low and coming up severly short. Their reasoning why is because everybody is saving their money to purchase the next gen systems this fall. As I said before, it will be interesting to see what happens this fall when the Wii, and PS3 drop. Unfortunatly, it is shown that hype can influence everybody to spend. Look what the X Box did. They sold well on hype and when everybody got caught up on Halo 2, the hype alone sold more machines before the game (halo 2) even dropped. As for the Wii being a 360 competitor, I seriously doubt it. Nintendo has done well targeting the "my first begginner consol" demograhic and thus it will do well again. Even though the PS3 is at a disadvantage (price, delayed release, new uncharted technology, prone to bugs), I still think it will give the 360 a run for the money. Sony has invested a shit load of money and research in to this machine hopeing to remain the leader in the gaming consol marketplace.

i agree KO that the ps3 will give the 360 a run. u know something tho i didnt have any interest in the Wii at all. but after watching g4 all week with e3 coverage. i have grown interest in the Wii now. i am very impressed with how the controller makes u feel like "you" the consumer is part of the game. we'll see if i cop one. another thing that i thought was kind of funny but strange for this to be said is. the 360 exec. said " i think consumer's should go out and buy the 360 and Wii, and then they can have 2 consoles for the price of ps3". him giving a plug to give any support to a competitor is alittle wierd to me.

The reason for that statment is because Microsoft is trying to exploit the PS3's main weakness and thats the price. They know that the Wii, even though it looks good, won't really compete with the 360.

Check this out. I was reading in the forums today and came across one post. The guy said "Where gonna all pay 600 bucks for a new system and their not even giving us a headset."
I got to thinking, No headset? It totally slipped my mind. They are talking about all the online games and didn't mention anything about a headset.. Add that to the total cost of money one will spend when ps3 drops.. Ching Ching..
