Sony Europe VP Hints at PS3 Price Range System could come in around $600 U.S. dollars.
by Jeff Haynes April 5, 2006 - During a radio interview with Générations Europe 1 yesterday, Georges Fornay, the president of Sony Computer France and the vice-president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, alluded to the possible price-point for the PS3's worldwide November launch (in addition to a few other details). Along with explaining that the system is the only next-generation system thanks to its implementation of Blu-ray and full HD visuals (as well as praising the other features of the console), he also explained that the delay of the system was due to the finalizing of digital rights management for the Blu-ray standard.
When asked about the rumors that the console would cost around 500 dollars, Fornay stated, "Well, listen, if we take into account Blu-ray, HD, we see Blu-ray players at 1000 euros or more, [PS3] will be extremely cheap when compared to that. When we look at the gaming aspect, it is true that today consoles were generally well below 500 euros (roughly $614 U.S.), and I would say that we will be in this price range. It will be costly for a game console and extremely cheap when we look at the technologies it will integrate."
This is definitely the most specific information yet provided about Sony's upcoming system since Ken Kutaragi's comments about wanting "Consumers to think to themselves 'I will work more hours to buy one.'" While there has been no official response from SCEA on Fournay's comments, it is only fair to guess that the price won't necessarily remain as high as it will be in Europe when the system hits American shores given the history of cheaper U.S. launch prices for Sony consoles.

I dont think the price will be different than other countries, not for a same day global launch. Cuz if it was a considerable difference in price, why wouldnt everyone just flock to that country for a shipment.

If we build a raft made of all the ally playstations and secure them with our playstation joystick cords. Then borrow Yardi's moms huge ass panties, which will be our sail; we could traverse the great ocean and go to Japan, very cheaply I might add, and buy playstation 3 when it comes out. Thoughts anyone?

Sony has denied that comments made by SCEE VP George Fornay indicate the official price range of the Playstation 3. Fornay was quoted earlier this week on French radio saying that the PS3 would go on sale for anywhere between €499 and €599 in Europe.
Responding to the hype and rumor it created, Sony claims that Fornay was “mistranslated or misunderstood” and that he was referring to its relatively low price when compared to Blu-ray products.
“Mr Fornay explained that, with BD and HD functionality, PS3 at this price would be cheap for such functionality, but that current video games machines were significantly below this price,” SCEE Corporate Communications Director, Nick Sharples, told GamesIndustry.biz.
“At no time did he suggest or indicate a specific price point or price range for PS3, and any reports that he did so are incorrect. [Emphasis by Ps3focus]
“He summarised by saying that PS3 would be expensive when one looked at the current price of a video games machine, at far below 500 Euros, but extremely good value when looking at the BD and HD technology inside,” he concluded.
Sony is likely to reveal new details about the Playstation 3 at the E3 conference in May 2006.

Speaking of price for the PS3, I am afraid that Blu Ray technology will never catch on to the average consumer. I was in Best Buy the other day, and they were already selling HD DVD players and movies. If the first series of Blu Ray players cost over $1000, then you can kiss this technology good bye. I know that the average PC gamer will embrace it, but at what cost.

Come to think about it, $600 is a great deal for the PS3, since you will be getting a blue ray player also. In stores, the HD DVD is already going for $1K. So you are actually getting a great deal buying the PS3. Also if you factor in buying the HD DVD player for the 360, the price should be the same as the PS3, if not even more.
